Louisiana Inmates & Prison Visitors To Be Restricted From Smoking Beginning August 15th

BATON ROUGE -- State and local prison inmates, the staff who oversee them and visitors to the jails will be restricted in their smoking habits starting Aug. 15, the state Department of Public Safety and Corrections said today.

Department spokeswoman Pam Laborde said that the 2006 law that banned smoking in most public places took affect Jan. 1, 2007, but its implementation for prisons was delayed. Keep Reading

Jury selection resumes Tuesday in Corey "C-Murder" Miller's retrial, after attorneys tentatively selected 11 jurors during more than nine hours of questioning Monday that focused on whether pretrial publicity has left them unable to fairly assess the facts of the case.

Miller is charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 12, 2002, shooting death of Steve Thomas, 16, a fan of the rapper's who was shot in the heart during a fight in the now-closed Platinum Club in Harvey. If convicted of the charge, Miller, 38, will spend the rest of his life in prison. Keep Reading

MEDICAID Cuts On the Way To Louisiana

Louisiana will start paying less money Tuesday to many private health care providers for taking care of Medicaid patients, a move the state health department estimates will save $86 million this year.

Lafayette police answered report of multiple shots

A homicide investigation is under way after a man's body, discovered in a crashed car this morning in downtown Lafayette, was found to have a bullet wound.
The Lafayette Police Department is asking for the public's help. Anyone who was near the Spirit Station and witnessed the shooting about 2 a.m. today should call the Lafayette Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 232- TIPS.

Police answered a report of multiple gunshots near the Spirit Station at Jefferson Boulevard and Evangeline Thruway. They found a red 2001 Lincoln Continental crashed into a wall at the train depot at Lee Avenue and the railroad tracks.

The man's body was found in the car, and police said he appeared to have died from a gunshot wound.
